Newport House, situated overlooking the estuary of the Newport River where it flows into Clew Bay, is the perfect base for fishing. Famous as a fishing centre, Newport House holds the fishing rights to the renowned Newport River (fly fishing only) with 8 miles of river (both banks) and Lough Beltra West 3 miles by 1 mile. The fishery holds a healthy stock of Spring salmon, grilse and still some seatrout, all fish are wild. Dependent on nature to restock , catches are consistent with a wild fishery. It is one of the few fisheries in Ireland where spring salmon can be fished from a boat. Spring fishing opens on 20th March and continues through June when the grilse (summer salmon) begin to show. There is often a run of bigger fish at the end of the season in September.

The river has 24 named pools with well maintained stiles, bridges & crossings making it easy to negotiate. The number of rods is controlled to ensure fishing privacy. A river is available and/or detailed map is available. Lough Beltra is situated 180ft above sea level and is fished from a boat with a with up to two rods per boat. Fishing is from 10am-6pm and is fly fishing only. A limited number of rods are available to rent at the House along with a classical range of flies. A basket lunch is available, and Newport House provides a drying room, freezing facilities and smoking of your catch can be arranged.
