mating Season on Lough Corrib: The Magic of the mayFly

February 2012: For experts, enthusiasts and the curious, Mayfly season on Lough Corrib has been a mecca for fishermen for well over 100 years. Guests travel from all over the world to experience the unique conditions on one of Ireland’s Great Western Lakes; with clear waters, the limestone Lough supports some of the fittest and strongest Wild Brown Trout that fight far beyond their size.

From late April until early June, the Mayfly hatch and the season is deeply engrained in the local traditions of the area. The pubs are full of fishermen swapping tales, exchanging fly patterns; even the local school children still get a special week’s holidays to collect and sell the Mayfly for some pocket money.

Currarevagh House, with its own private estate on the shores of Lough Corrib, has been welcoming fishermen for 120 years to fish the Mayfly season. Run as a guesthouse by the Hodgson family for 5 generations, it is the perfect base for savouring the phenomenon that is Mayfly Season on Corrib; providing comfortable accommodation, wonderful local food and the old world charms of a traditional Irish Country House. They have their own boats and can also organise some of the best local ghillies, with vast knowledge of the lake and its conditions. It all adds up to a wonderfully unique experience not to be missed, and one guests return for year after year.
