Spring Birdwatch in The Burren

Date: Saturday 21st March 2009

Join Ornithologist Gordon D'Arcy in an in depth exploration of the varied birdlife of the Burren on March 21st 2009. With spring in full swing, many of the wintering birds of the Burren are preparing to return to their Arctic breeding grounds. Many others, having spent the winter in Africa are now returning to nest in the Burren. This is a very exciting time for bird watchers. Luxurious Gregans Castle Hotel, in the heart of the Burren, is the starting point for our day-long excursion. From here we will be visiting a variety of Burren habitats from the unique open landscape of the limestone pavements, to the native hazel scrub turloughs and the dramatic coastline in pursuit of birds. It is expected that fifty or more species will be identified in the course of the day, depending of course on the weather. We finish the day again in the elegant comfort of Gregans Castle Hotel.

Burren May Birdsong

Date: Saturday 9th May 2009

Join Ornithologist Gordon D'Arcy to learn the songs of our native birds on May 9th 2009. The Burren is a haven for songbirds, including species like the cuckoo, which have become scarce in many parts of Ireland. Spend the morning listening and looking for the twenty or so songbirds found in the Burren and learning their various songs. From the luxury of Gregans Castle Hotel we will visit at least two different habitats near Ballyvaughan, where many songbirds are to be found.
