Arrive at Shannon airport and drive to either Gregans Castle or Moy House, both ideally suited for your first golfing experience and a short drive from the Lahinch and Doonbeg golf courses. Take a deep breath as you will be playing two of the finest links courses in Ireland. Both of these courses will need to be booked in advance. However, your hosts in Gregans and Moy House can give you some assistance, if you need it.
Overnight: Gregans Castle or Moy House
Driving south check into the Mustard Seed at Echo Lodge, which is located in Ballingarry, a small village near to Adare, Co. Limerick. Here you will be playing one of the giants – Ballybunnion Golf course. Again, this is a course that you will need to book in advance, owing to its popularity.
Overnight: The Mustard Seed
This tour is offering you a nice mix of courses and in Co. Kerry you will be playing on Killarney golf course, a superb parkland course, which has hosted several Irish Opens over the years. Try and fit in a round at Dooks golf course, which is a beautiful scenic parkland course, with some heavenly sea views and nearby to Killorglin. For the really energetic there is the option for a third course during these two days and what better course to include than Waterville Golf Club, where some of the great professionals have come to practice over the years.
Overnight: The Park Hotel Kenmare or Carrig Country House
Your next day’s drive means that you have to be up early and you should head to Kinsale to play the majestic Old Head golf course– not for the faint hearted! When you have completed your round you should take the Cork tunnel for your next two nights at Ballymaloe House, located near Midleton, Co. Cork, and where you can re-charge the batteries. Next day you will be playing at Fota Island golf course, which is getting quite a reputation as being one of the finest courses in the country.
Overnight: Ballymaloe House
Other overnight options in Cork: Longueville House, Hayfield Manor or Ahernes Restaurant & Townhouse.
You are now on the last leg of your golf odyssey as you head towards Dublin and stopping off at Rathsallagh House, near Dunlavin, Co. Wicklow. As well as being a stunning country house they have a wonderful parkland course (Rathsallagh Golf Course) and it is much longer than most golf courses so you will be getting a walk in as well as some golf – you might need a buggy by this stage!! Watch out for the 19th hole in their clubhouse – where the locals will be holding forth on their golfing prowess.
Overnight: Rathsallagh House
Depart for Dublin airport (drive time approx. 1.5 hours).
If you don’t need a stretcher by now then you will definitely win the money when playing next time with your pals!
