September 2018: Luxury Barge Hotel, the Shannon Princess has been featured in the Wall Street Journal’s recent article on luxury barge cruises around Europe. The Wall Street Journal is the USA’s largest publication, with a circulation of approximately 2.277 million.
The article features luxury barge cruises in various locations in France, the UK and Ireland, as well as information on itineraries offered. The Shannon Princess, a member of Ireland’s Blue Book, offers 6 night cruises on the River Shannon. Cruising from Lough Ree in County Westmeath as far as Killaloe in County Clare, it is particularly popular with tourists from overseas who wish to experience a novel accommodation offering.
Visitors from North America to the island of Ireland amounted to 1.83 million in 2017. Irish Tourism organisation - Tourism Ireland - has predicted a growth of 5%for 2018, helped, in part, by the introduction of several new flights between the USA and Ireland, including a new flight between Shannon and New York which will launch in October 2018.
According to data compiled by Tourism Ireland, visitors to Ireland from the USA are some of the most likely to explore Ireland by car, and not restrict themselves to cities. This opens up the opportunities for accommodation providers in more rural areas, to attract more overseas tourism, particularly from the USA.
“Small,… and slow moving”, hotel barges can access some of Europe’s most beautiful rural areas” (Sara Tucker, Wall Street Journal)
